Myth
Cybele, the Great Mother, is a symbol of creative and destructive forces of nature. Her cult is related the her boundless carnal love for Attis, who eventually committed suicide for betraying her. In her honor, priests were willingly wounding themselves, and mating during an orgiastic ritual.
She is Mistress of the beasts, at ease in wild places, on her lion-drawn chariot. In this evening, we want to relate her to the strenght of women living the passion for their beloved one in the feral grasp of ropes and arms.
The myth tells Cybele used to play a lyre for the young Attis, and she was constantly devoting herself to his pleasure. Despite her devotion, Attis looked for a mortal woman’s love. Caught by Cybele, and overcomed by a sense of guilt, he killed himselfs beneath a pine. Form his blood drops violets were born, now symbol of the force of nature, coming back to life in spring.
The goddess, frantic, asked Zeus to resuscitate the young man. She was only granted his body not to rot, and his hair to keep growing.
